Strategies for Sustaining High Levels of Focus in School

If you’re a student, chances are you lead a pretty busy life. School, social engagements, maybe a sport or a part-time-job – that’s a lot to juggle!

Since students have jam-packed schedules most days of the week, it’s important that students are maintaining good levels of energy and focus in order to accomplish tasks on a consistent basis. Energy spikes and dips are not ideal for the busy student – getting through school is a marathon, not a sprint!

What students need is to find ways to master and manage their energy throughout each and every day in a way that is healthy and sustainable. It’s easy to gravitate towards coffee, energy drinks, and other quick-fixes to boost energy in the short-term, but these quick energy boosts come with a short zap of energy followed commonly by a big crash, and a host of other unwanted side effects.

Making sure you’re getting good sleep, exercising regularly, and eating a balanced and nutritious diet are some of the best ways to ensure you have sustained and long-lasting energy throughout the entire school year. Plus, if you do want a boost from time to time, yerba mate can be a much healthier option compared to coffee, and especially compared to most popular energy drinks. Mate Libre products are convenient, tasty, and healthy – throw one in your school bag and have an epic day!

Here are 5 awesome strategies to help you crush the school year by mastering and managing your energy game!

Sleep: Make Sure You’re Getting Enough Shut-Eye

Sleep sits at the foundation of your energy game – it’s going to be nearly impossible to focus during school hours if you’re not getting enough sleep at night.

Teenagers should be sleeping between 8-10 hours each night, while adults should be sleeping anywhere from 7-9 hours each night. Some people claim they can get away with only 5 or 6 hours each night, but there’s a good chance these people aren’t functioning as well as they could during their waking hours, even if they are successful in school or at their job.

If you want to stay focused during lectures (especially if the topic is boring!), and make sure you can concentrate enough to complete your assignments and study for your exams, you’ll need to start with a good night of sleep.

Exercise: Move for At Least 30 Minutes Every Single Day

It’s recommended that adolescents get 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity per week, while adults are advised to get at least 150 minutes per week of moderate to vigorous physical activity.

While the CDC considers brisk walking as moderate physical activity, most young, healthy adolescents would benefit from swimming, cycling, jogging, resistance training, or participating in a sport or outdoor physical activity on a daily basis.

Being physically active is one of the best things you can do for your heart and for your brain.

More than that, exercising can also play a role in sleep quality. When you’re getting the recommended dose of physical activity per week, chances are you’ll be sleeping better than when you’re sedentary.

Nutrition: Eat Balanced Meals Throughout the Day

Skipping breakfast is easy when you’re busy, but starting your day with a healthy balance of protein, fats, and carbohydrates from whole foods is a fantastic way to jumpstart your body and mind for the big day ahead of you.

There are many diets and approaches to nutrition, and while there is not a single approach that works for everyone, generally favouring whole foods over processed foods – and trying not to overeat or undereat – are easy ways to stay healthy with regards to diet.

In particular, skipping meals or having meals that are high in processed ingredients (especially sugar and fat), is a great way to make sure you’re napping by 3 pm. Likewise, be careful what you eat and how much you eat close to bedtime. Remember: what you eat – and how much you eat – can affect your quality of sleep, too.

Caffeine: Be careful Not to OverDo It With Coffee and Energy Drinks

It’s easy to rely on coffee or energy drinks for quick boosts of energy and focus throughout the day. These can seem particularly appealing when you’re tired, hungry, and stressed. So, first and foremost, you can avoid overusing caffeine by making sure you’re well-slept, well-fed, and that you’re managing your stress as much as possible.

Having a single coffee in the morning with breakfast isn’t going to ruin your day, and there are some healthy energy drinks that exist that some athletes prefer to consume before workouts.

The problem comes when you overload your system with caffeine by having multiple cups of coffee per day, or by consuming energy drinks that are full of sugar, more caffeine than you need, and a range of artificial ingredients.

Plus, too much caffeine will only result in a temporary boost of energy and focus. To be successful in school, you’ll need prolonged and sustained energy so that you can tackle the entire school year without crashing!

Caffeine and energy drinks are tempting, but there may be a better alternative: yerba mate

Bonus: Try Some Yerba Mate for a Natural, Sustained Boost

Yerba Mate is a popular South American tea, and its consumption is associated with a wide range of positive health benefits.

Yerba mate contains caffeine, but it also contains theobromine, which can mitigate some of the unwanted effects that follow caffeine consumption – such as irritability, jitters, and energy crashes.

Some people brew their own yerba mate tea, but students are busy – they need something on the go! Luckily, Mate Libre has a ready-to-drink yerba mate infusion that tastes awesome, is super healthy, and contains the perfect amount of caffeine and antioxidants that provide a natural, sustained boost of energy and focus.

So, why should students drink Mate Libre?

  • Mate Libre cans contain 60mg of natural caffeine per serving – the perfect amount for a healthy boost of energy and focus.

  • Students can choose between 5 delicious flavours: original, ginger, mint & lime, rose & hibiscus, and passion. Yum!
