Yerba
Mate

Forget coffee. If you're looking for a drink that will give you energy while keeping you focused, yerba mate is the answer. This plant, also known by its biological name Ilex paraguariensis, is native to South America, where it has been used for centuries for its energizing and revitalizing properties.

It's a great alternative to coffee, with a high dose of antioxidants and nutrients, without the undesirable side effects of caffeine. So why drink coffee that leaves you on edge, when you can get a natural boost with yerba mate?

Its origins

Did you know that the consumption of yerba mate dates back thousands of years? The Guarani and Tupi-Guarani peoples discovered it as a miracle remedy for body and mind. Now, it's our remedy for simple energy dips and difficult mornings!

Traditionally, it was consumed during religious and other tribal ceremonies. The plant's leaves were dried, crushed and infused to produce a hot, stimulating brew that was sipped from a calabash (small container), using a bombilla (filtering straw).

Yerba mate is so popular in South America that millions of people around the world have swapped coffee for it.

Is it tea?

No, no, no! Mate Libre is made from an infusion of yerba mate.

It's true that yerba mate is often confused with tea, due to their similarity in preparation and consumption.

Tea comes from the leaves of the camellia sinensis tree. The different teas - white, oolong, pu-erh (aged) and black - come from different periods and methods of leaf fermentation (drying).

The yerba mate production process is also different from that of tea. The yerba mate leaves are dried and heated to retain their flavor and properties, without undergoing fermentation. The result is an infusion rich in antioxidants and health-giving nutrients, yet naturally stimulating.

Is it kombucha?

Mate Libre is not a fermented product. No vinegar taste. Much more energizing than Kombucha!

Kombucha is made from an infusion of tea and sometimes even yerba mate. Fermentation of the kombucha mushroom reduces the caffeine content of the infusion by around 70%.

Air-dried yerba mate VS smoked

Our yerba mate is air-dried and not smoked: healthy and non-carcinogenic.

The process of drying yerba mate leaves can have an impact on health if the methods used are not controlled.

We have opted for an air-drying method for our yerba mate: healthier and more respectful of the environment. The yerba mate used to produce Mate Libre is dried using an air exchanger and never comes into contact with fire, smoke or ashes. No polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, chemical contamination or cancer risks. Superior quality and fresher taste!
